St John's Wort is a perennial herb that’s beloved by gardeners everywhere! This hardy plant is found in woodlands, fields and pastures all over the world, flourishing wherever its bright yellow flowers can bask in the sunshine. Its Latin name Hypericum perforatum comes from its characteristic perforated leaves; if you hold them up to the sun, you can almost see right through them.  In medieval times, people believed St John's Wort had magical qualities – they hung wreaths of its leaves over windows and doorways to ward off evil spirits and protect against lightning strikes.
 
 
Nowadays, St Johns Wort isn't used for warding away supernatural visitors, but it’s still just as useful! Plant some seeds in your garden between spring and late summer or early fall to watch as bright cheery yellow blooms transform your outdoor living space. For best results, press the seeds into the soil without covering them completely; they need some sunlight for germination! The days of harvest are June 24th (St. Johns Day) when the flowers first appear, and early August. This versatile plant grows best in moderately fertile soil with moist humidity levels and a slightly acidic pH level – full-sun or partial shade should do it justice. With an average germination time of 10-20 days, St Johns Wort is an easy herb for any gardener's flower bed!
